CLINICAL COUNSELLING
My theoretical approach integrates Interpersonal theory, Person Centered theory, Cognitive Theory, Attachment theory and Family Systems theory. I also consider myself Feminist Theory informed and trauma-informed at all times.
My main model of therapy comes from Edward Teyber's book "The Interpersonal Process in Psychotherapy: A Relational Approach"; this approach asks me to be consistently aware of the interpersonal patterns you may have as a client, how they might play out in therapy, whether they are problematic in your life, to point them out when they do play out in therapy and explore them, and provide a corrective emotional experience for you, if needed. Along with this approach, I integrate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD (CPT for PTSD), and a variety of other models and interventions that fit for clients and their specific needs. My specialization tends to be attachment, trauma, complex trauma, and interpersonal relationships. However, I am very comfortable working with grief and loss, stress, work stress, anxiety, depression, life transitions, failure to launch for youth and young adults, and transition to university.
Research tells us that two keys to successful therapy are both your motivation to make change and our ability to form an authentic connected relationship. Beyond that, I like to focus on what you want to get out of therapy, and then use my skills and experience to help and support you achieve those goals.
*I respect and appreciate the work that first responders do for our community and am always happy to support them.
